[tex-live] TLU update fails (non-corporate MacOS machine)

What does the ls -l say? Is the file readable for everyone?

Can you please send me a tar.gz or similar of the following files:
* /usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-dist/ls-R
* /usr/local/texlive/2018/texmf-dist/web2c/fmtutil.cnf
* the output of kpsewhich --debug -1 fmtutil.cnf

> $ latex t

Doesn't work since the format is not defined and built, no need to try.

> updmap [ERROR]: The following map file(s) couldn't be found:

> updmap [ERROR]: 	pdftex35.map (in builtin)
> updmap [ERROR]: 	ps2pk35.map (in builtin)

Again, that looks strange. These files should be there in

kpse lookup is broken on your system. I have no idea why.

If this does not work, nothing work, nor updmap, nor fmtutil, nor latex.
